Tackling hospitalized malnutrition
Disease related malnutrition in hospitalized patients is a serious condition with both clinical and economic implications. In Swiss hospitals, 20-30% of the admitted patients, is undernourished or “at high risk” for malnutrition [1].
The main objective of the project is the development of an artificial intelligence system that takes advantage of the availability of depth sensors and conceptual information to estimate the consumed energy, macro- and micronutrient content of hospitalized patients, as based on the automatic analysis of a patient’s tray before and after the meal [2, 3].
The system is developed by the ARTORG Center and validated in collaboration with the Catering and Food Services of the Bern University Hospital “Inselspital” and the Group of Nutritional Medicine and Metabolism of the Bern University Hospital “Inselspital”. The research is funded by the SV Stiftung.
