Empower diabetes self-management

In 2015, after six (6) years of research, the AI in Health and Nutrition – AIHN laboratory (former Diabetes Technology Research – DTR group) of the ARTORG Center has introduced the first fully operative system for calculating the carbohydrate content of meals for individuals with type 1 diabetes. The first prototype, developed within the framework of the GoCARB project, estimates the carbohydrates from food images using artificial intelligence and computer vision algorithms. GoCARB was validated in a number of pre-clinical studies involving individuals with diabetes and dietitians, as well as in a pilot clinical trial engaging adults with type 1 diabetes under sensor-augmented pump therapy.

The group is working towards an extended and improved version of the prototype taking into consideration the users’ feedback, the nutritional guidelines for diabetes management and the latest advances in the field of smartphone technologies and artificial intelligence . Stay tuned!
